DAY 5

Day : 5 - 14 October 2014 (Tuesday)

A. English Language Class (Accountancy)

Today we focused on ‘English Language Class (Accountancy)’ with Mr. Bill as our trainer. We enjoyed the activities implemented by him such as Word Rose, Jigsaw Reading and Listening Task. We learnt some terminologies pertaining to Accountancy such as ‘Letter to Management’, ‘to sign off’, ‘Statutory Financial Accounts’ and etc. In the Jigsaw Reading activity, we were exposed to the responsibilities of an accountant and auditor. Later on, Mr. Bill carried out a listening task where we had to fill in the gap (missing information) on the worksheet given. He also shared with us the history of the Ernst & Young Firm. We were surprised to know that both Mr. Ernst and Mr. Young had never met each other!

B. Focus Assessment & Effective Error Correction

The second session of the day was conducted by Mr. Chris with ‘Focus of Assessment and Effective Error Correction’. This session enriched our knowledge on the focus of assessment where it is divided into 3 aspects; Content, Language and both Content and Language. We also picked up 3 key concepts of CLIL assessment which are:

  • Communicative skills (Speaking and Writing)
  • Cognitive skills (Thinking)
  • Practical skills (Kinesthetic / Hands-on)

Mr. Chris also touched on Error Corrections and how to deal with them (i.e., teacher correction, peer correction or self- correction. Above all, we could say that “making mistake is a part of learning”.

C. Language Demands Of Subject Content & Accompanying Tasks

Later in the afternoon, Ms. Carole brought to us the topic on ‘Language demands of subject content and accompanying tasks’. At first, genre-based approach was introduced. It was very motivating to discover a new resource for English language teachers; The Academic Word List (AWL) developed by Avery Coxhead provided in Wiktionary. We found it beneficial as it can be used to teach high frequency academic words to our students. Then, Ms. Carole moved on to discuss the process of genre-based approach

Impact / Reflection :

Overall, the topics on Day 5 were challenging yet stimulating. The Word Rose is indeed an interesting way to introduce new lexical items to students. Additionally, we received a lot of information on how to make our assessments more focused. We really like the idea of peer correction and self-correction. Last but not least, the AWL is very resourceful for us in enriching our students’ vocabulary. Thank you so much dear trainers. We can’t wait to apply this new knowledge in our teaching.
